The 16's won their first round cup match against Grosvenor 3-1. The whites started of brightly dominating the opening possession and getting what looked like an early lead from an own goal coming from a Dale Monroe throw in, but the referee ruled that the ball had not been touched and had found its way into the net directly from the throw. The disappointment was short lived as the first goal was not long in coming and what a goal. The whites won the ball in central midfield through Corey Ranaghan who picked out Adam McCleans run and played the ball out to him, Adam went past the full back had a look and sent in a great cross to the back post for Chris Walmsey who out jumped the defender and headed the ball into the corner of the net.
Distillery had to wait to just before half time for their second. Defending a Grosvenor corner Ben White was able to pick out Chris Walmsey with his clearance who took the ball past his marker then threaded a pass through to his strike partner Rhys Grainger. Rhys outpaced the recovering defenders and took the ball in his stride and finished coolly into the bottom corner. A classic counter attacking goal which from start to finish took about 4 seconds.
Grosvenor came out in the second half with much more determination and wouldn't let distillery settle on the ball and started to dominate, but the whites dug in and fought back and carved out anther chance but as Rhys was breaking into their box he was brought down. Chris struck the bottom of the post with the resultant penalty. The miss encouraged Grosvenor who pushed Distillery back looking for a goal which they got coming from their forward at the edge of the box after the ball had been pinged about between defenders and forwards at the opposite corner. Any hope Grosvenor got from this was short lived as the whites reignited their attacking play with Rhys Grainger scoring the third with an absolutely wonderful lob over the keeper after great link up play through Mark, Ryan, Corey and Ben in midfield to Chris who played in Rhys. Grosvenor continued to push but the Distillery defence seen the game out comfortably with the best goal chances coming to the whites. All in all a good team performance with everybody from Jonny in nets through the whole defence, midfield and forward line playing their part.
U 16's won 2-1in a very hard fought game against Newry. Conor Moore scoring the first with a header from a corner. And Ryan Campbell getting the second with a lovely shot across the keeper into the bottom corner after making a great run to be picked out by Ben White with the pass of the season (think Gerrard to Suarez only better). Newry got their goal towards the end and can only feel very unlucky not to have gotten something out of the game, largely due to man of the match Jonny Walsh.
